About Books for Afghanistan

Literacy rooted in language, culture, and stories.

The KOR–Hoopoe mission is to give books and supporting learning materials to Afghan children, libraries, schools, and community-based literacy classes.

Mission

Give children books of their own—and the tools to learn from them.

The program provides beautifully illustrated retellings of traditional teaching-stories from Afghanistan and the surrounding region, together with read-along audio, teacher lesson plans, teacher training, and radio programs.

The stories support literacy while encouraging comprehension, social-emotional development, analogical thought, and flexible problem-solving.

Mother-tongue literacy

Begin with the language a child knows best.

Afghanistan is a multilingual society with more than 40 minority languages and many dialects. The program’s bilingual editions help children begin reading in their home language and transfer those skills to Dari or Pashto for continued education.

Books at home

Children take books home to read with siblings, parents, and neighbors.

Cultural continuity

Traditional stories reconnect young readers with narratives recognized by elders.

Teaching support

Guides and training help teachers build literacy, discussion, and assessment into lessons.
